John Coltrane 100
Niagara Jazz Festival and JADE Niagara bring five of Canada's most celebrated jazz musicians together at Helliwell Hall on September 16 to mark the centenary of John Coltrane, one of the most influential figures in jazz history.
Coltrane reshaped jazz through his unmistakable tenor sound, adventurous improvisation, groundbreaking compositions and increasingly spiritual approach to music. A century after his birth, his influence continues to shape generations of musicians well beyond jazz.
The evening brings together a formidable Canadian lineup: Pat LaBarbera and Kirk MacDonald on tenor saxophones, Brian Dickinson on piano, Neil Swainson on upright bass and Terry Clarke on drums.
Between them are multiple JUNO Awards and decades at the highest levels of Canadian jazz. LaBarbera and MacDonald are two of the country's most respected saxophonists, while Dickinson, Swainson and Clarke form the kind of rhythm section that makes this much more than simply a tribute concert.
