BEAT: Belew/Vai/Levin/Bozzio Performing the Music of KING CRIMSON

For devotees of adventurous music, there are lineups that almost seem too improbable to be real. BEAT is one of them.

Former King Crimson members Adrian Belew and Tony Levin are joined by guitar virtuoso Steve Vai and legendary drummer Terry Bozzio for a final North American tour celebrating the remarkable music King Crimson created during the 1980s — particularly the landmark albums Discipline, Beat and Three of a Perfect Pair.

Belew and Levin were integral members of the King Crimson lineup that created those records, helping reinvent the band around intricate interlocking guitars, unconventional rhythms, improvisation and an entirely new musical vocabulary. Belew brought his distinctive guitar work and vocals to the group, while Levin's Chapman Stick and bass became fundamental parts of its sound.

There is another musical family connection in this incarnation of BEAT that is difficult to ignore. Belew, Vai and Bozzio all spent formative periods working with Frank Zappa. Belew joined Zappa's band in the late 1970s before going on to work with David Bowie, Talking Heads and eventually King Crimson. Vai's extraordinary career began when his ability to transcribe Zappa's notoriously complex music led to a place in Zappa's band, while Bozzio's tenure produced some of the most celebrated drumming associated with Zappa's music.

Tony Levin completes the quartet with a résumé that extends well beyond King Crimson, including decades of work with Peter Gabriel and appearances on recordings by an extraordinary range of artists.

BEAT isn't intended as a conventional tribute band recreating old records note for note. Instead, four musicians with deep connections to this music — and formidable musical identities of their own — revisit a catalogue built around precision, experimentation and the willingness to take chances.

For this final North American run, Terry Bozzio takes the drum chair previously occupied by Tool's Danny Carey, adding another distinctive voice to music that has always left room for musicians to reshape it rather than simply reproduce it.

For longtime followers of King Crimson, Zappa and progressive music in general, this is a fairly extraordinary collection of musical history occupying one stage.
